Adopted name of Mihaly Kertesz. 1888-1962.
Hungarian-born film director who worked in
Austria, Germany, and France before moving to
the USA in 1926 where he made several films
with Errol Flynn, directed Mildred Pierce
1945, which revitalised Joan Crawford's
career, and Casablanca 1942, for which he won
an Academy Award. His wide range of films
includes Doctor X 1932; The Adventures of
Robin Hood 1938; and White Christmas 1954.
